WHOI senior research assistant, Kali Horn, uses 3-D printed models of microscopic algae to teach the students about harmful algal blooms (HABs).

The students weather the storm on the deck of WHOI’s research ship Tioga, to learn about the instruments commonly used in studying the ocean, such as the CTD rosette, shown. The CTD takes water samples, recording the ocean temperature and salinity at various depths.

After a lesson in HABs (harmful algal blooms), the students participated in a heat-map activity, to track where HABs events have happened in past years. HABs can pose a problem for marine animals and some of the seafood humans enjoy.

At the WHOI Dock, some of the students gather around a whimsical sculpture of Neptune, god of the sea.

At NOAA Fisheries, the visiting 7th graders had a chance to try on a “Gumby” suit – critical to surviving during an emergency at sea.

REMUS is an autonomous vehicle whose missions have included tracking sharks and sea turtles to looking for leaks in NY City’s water system to searching for ships and airplanes lost to the ocean. The students heard from Nathan McGuire and Emily Lau in the REMUS lab.
