The Perfect Storm: Exploring how sea level rise and storms intersect

Description

Professional learning workshop for informal and formal educators Grades 6-12.

Join us to learn the basics of sea level rise, discover how we see the impacts during high tide and big storms, explore how you can use data and observations to explore this in your classroom, and discuss how to make this local and relevant for your students.  We’ll get regional context and examples on Cape Cod.  Take home a thumb drive with background material and classroom activities. We’ll be walking to the beach for a profiling activity so please dress accordingly.

Tentative Workshop Agenda

8:45 – 9:15 -- Arrive WHOI Clark Laboratory, Room 507.  Breakfast: pastries, coffee, juice, tea, water

9:15 – 9:30 --Introduction to Woods Hole Sea Grant and WHOI

9:30 – 10:30 -- Greg Berman, Coastal Processes Specialist, Woods Hole Sea Grant/Barnstable County Cooperative Extension

10:30 – 10:45 -- Break

10:45 – 11:45 -- Shannon Hulst, Coastal Processes Specialist, Woods Hole Sea Grant/Barnstable County Cooperative Extension

11:45 – 1:00 -- LUNCH.  Lesson plans, standards, and classroom integration discussion.

1:00 – 1:15 -- Split into 2 groups and proceed to afternoon sessions

1:15 – 2:15 -- Group 1 - Field trip to local beach. Group 2 - hands-on classroom activities.

2:15 – 3:15 -- Groups swap locations

3:15 - 4:00 -- Closing remarks and PDP distribution
