Little Pond’s journey to recovery after sewering
*Join us for a pint and the second conversation in a three-part series
about Cape Cod water quality concerns!*

Amy Lowell (Town of Falmouth) and Ken Foreman (Marine Biological Laboratory) will talk about the future of sewer expansion in Falmouth and the expected impacts on local watersheds. Amy will address the Town’s plans to expand the sewer system and construct an outfall for treated wastewater discharge. Ken will introduce his study of the ecosystem’s response to sewering, which addresses how long it might take ponds to recover from long term nitrogen loading.
The conversation will start at 5:30pm and last about an hour. Come curious for a Q&A and a chance to chat with the researchers and fellow science enthusiasts after the event!

Reduce, Remove, Restore: Can new septic technologies remove more than nitrogen
George Heufelder (Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center), Jed Goldstone (WHOI) and Helen Poynton (UMass Boston) explored how wastewater impacts water quality. What’s in our wastewater? What makes it through septic systems and into the environment? And how might IA septic systems keep nitrogen and compounds like contaminants of environmental concern (“CEC’s) from impacting our delicate coastal ecosystems?
