Reduce, Remove, Restore:

Can new septic technologies remove more than nitrogen?

*Join us for a pint and the first conversation in a three-part series
about Cape Cod water quality concerns!*

October 29, 2025

5:30 p.m.

at Aquatic Brewing
(
661 Main Street Falmouth, MA 02540)

*Parking details below*

George Heufelder (Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center), Jed Goldstone (WHOI), and Helen Poynton (UMass Boston) will explore how wastewater impacts water quality. What’s in our wastewater? What makes it through septic systems and into the environment? And how might IA septic systems keep nitrogen and compounds like contaminants of environmental concern (“CEC’s) from impacting our delicate coastal ecosystems?

The conversation will start at 5:30pm and last about an hour. Come curious for a Q&A and a chance to chat with the researchers and fellow science enthusiasts after the event!

Cape Cod Baywatch: How do ocean currents influence water quality?

WHOl researchers Malcolm Scully and Irina Rypina steered us through the science of water quality in Cape Cod Bay. A captive audience learned about what drove recent low-oxygen dead zones and how radioactive wastewater from Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station's decommissioning could make its way through the Bay.
