Impacts of Human-derived Pollutants on the Coastal Environment

Description:

Explore the linkages between human-derived marine debris/pollutants and the health of our coastal environment. Experiment on the breakdown of plastic by sunlight based on their color, examine zebrafish under a microscope that have been exposed to various pollutants, and experience research first hand. Take home a thumb drive with background material and classroom activities. Cost: $30.  Registration deadline is Tuesday, April 30, 2019.

Tentative Workshop Agenda

8:45 – 9:15 -- Arrive WHOI Discovery Center.  Breakfast: pastries, coffee, juice, tea, water

9:15 – 9:30 -- Introduction to Discovery Center, Kathy Patterson, Discovery Center and Information Office Liasion

9:30 – 10:15 -- Dr. Chris Reddy, WHOI Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department

10:15 – 10:30 --Break

10:30 – 11:45 --Dr. John Stegeman, WHOI Biology Department

11:45 – 1:00 -- LUNCH in the Discovery Center.  Lesson plans, standards, and classroom integration discussion.

1:00 – 1:15 -- Split into 2 groups and proceed to afternoon sessions

1:15 – 2:00 -- Afternoon session 1.  Visit lab for zebrafish experiment OR visit lab for plastics experiment.

2:00 – 2:15 -- Groups swap locations

2:15 – 3:00 -- Afternoon session 2.  Visit lab for zebrafish experiment OR visit lab for plastics experiment.

3:00 -- Stop by Discovery Center for PDP certificate and head out.
