Halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (HAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants of the global environment. Some HAHs, especially the so-called planar HAH (PHAH), are highly toxic to many vertebrate species. In this paper, the authors present and discuss the hypothesis that the sensitivity of marine mammals to PHAH can be predicted from an understanding of the comparative biochemistry of proteins involved in the molecular mechanisms of PHAH action.
